Iproposethatthetwobestdisciplinestounderstandthispowerofthecommonplaceanditsabilitytocauseagroundswellofthoughtarephilosophyandliterature.Everyschoolofphilosophy,fromtheGreekstoourday,shareacommonmissionorintentandthatistounderstandandexplainhumanexistence,withallofitsconcommitantfeatures.Generallyspeaking,theGreekphilosophers,epitomizedinAristotle,attemptedtosetdownrulesforhumanbehaviorfoundedonlogic.Theserulesappliednotonlytotherareformsofhumanbehaviorbutlargelyfocusedonthemoremundanemotionsofdailylife.ManyofAristotle’sruleswerebasedonhisobservationsofothersaswellashimself.Contrastthisventurewiththeexistentialistsofourcenturywhoattemptedtolookbehindtherealmotivationsofhumanbehavioraswellunderstandman’srelationtotheUniverse.Todothis,whatdidthesephilosophersdo?Theystudiedthosearoundthem;theysubmergedthemselvesinthecommonplace,incitieswithhordesofannonymouspeople.Whiletheexistentialists,aswellthosephilosophersbefore,exploitedtheiruncommoneduationandintellect,thebasisfortheirmovementwasordinaryhumanbehaviorandexistence.
