Asanelementaryeducator,Ibelievethisstanceisextremist.Educatorsandthepublicmustcometoamiddleroad.Thehighroadandthelowroadareintimatedinthisstatement.Ibelievethehighroadonthistopic(fromwhenceshouldcurriculumcome)representsanouveauapproach.Askthestudentswhattheywanttolearnandstudyfortheyear;thenmeander,researchandbranchoffoftheirinterests.Thelowroadonthistopic(directlyendorsedbythisstatement)isoldfashionedandoutdated.Theassumptionsbehindthisviewincludeamagicalabilitybyteacherstoinfusereamsofinformation,dataandknowledgeintostudents’brainsthatthenbecomeinternalizedandappliedbythestudents.
Inacomplexandfrighteningsociety,wemustlooktothemiddleroad.Wemustinfusethebestofthehighandthelowroads.Currentresearchhashadalottosayoncurriculumdevelopment.Overreachingargumentsdefendthequalityofstudents’self-directedlearning.However,inordertoprepareourstudentsforthissociety,wemusthavedevelopedthebackboneandanchorforcurriculum.Contentandperformancestandards(i.e.curricula)needtobedevelopedbythedistrict’seducatorsasamapforteachers.WheneducatorsprovidestudentswithchoicesWITHINthemapofcurriculum,studentsrelishinthefreedomandtakeownershipfortheirlearning.
Werewetoprovidestudentstheultimateauthorityincurriculumdevelopment,wewouldbedoinganinjusticenotonlytoourstudentsbuttosocietyasawhole.Therearespecificskillsandabilitiesthatneedtobedevelopedandtaught--regardlessofstudents’(orforthatmatter,teachers’)interest.Inmyprofessionasanelementaryeducatorandasaparent,Ivaluetheabilitiestoread,writeandbemathematicallyproficient.Thosestudentsnotmasteringthosecriticalskillsareatadisadvantage.Weseethosestudentsbecomedestructiveordepressed.Ihaveobservedstudentsstrugglingwiththebasicsbecomeoutcastsintheirownlittleworlds.Veryyoungoutcastsgrowintoadultoutcasts. 外语学习网
IdoNOTthinkitisunfortunatethattoday’seducatorsemphasizestudents’interests.ItISourduty,however,toprovidetheparametersfortheireducation.Wecannotsimplystatethateducatorsdeterminecurriculumandstudentsfollow.Thisisjustnotrealityintheclassrooms.Whenstandardsandcurricularmapshavebeendeveloped,teachersoftoday’schildrenhavetheresponsibility(yes,theduty!)tobringlifetothosemaps.Onecrucialandsuccessfulway,istoprovidestudentsvarietyandchoiceswithinthecontextof"whatneedstobecovered."Theeducatorwhobringscurriculatolifeforherstudentsandgivesherstudentstheresponsibilitytomakechoiceshelpstoprepareourchildrenforthriving--notjustsurviving.
